Phil And I’m Phil. Today we’re talking about a surprise result in Brazil’s presidential election.
Becca That’s right. Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, better known as Lula, has been elected president for the fourth time. His victory came as a surprise after he lost the first round of voting.
Phil Lula is a left-wing candidate who has campaigned on rejecting US influence on Brazilian politics. This is different from many other Latin American countries where right-wing candidates supported by Donald Trump have won recently.
Becca When the result was announced, Brazilian financial markets and the currency fell sharply. There are concerns about Brazil’s budget deficit and whether Lula’s policies could make it worse.
